STITCH Design Shop converted an existing gallery and event space in the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts to accommodate a new gallery, reception space, gift shop and black box theater. Supporting the Arts Council’s goal of pushing the Winston arts and cultural sector to the next level, the design incorporates several nods to the local culture and community.

Creativity

The theater component includes the renovation of a double height space that is part of the National Landmark of Historic Places Sawtooth Building. The theater has retractable seating that also allows the space to be used as an event and reception space. The design includes a full LED theatrical lighting package, audio, and digital video system.

Confidence

At the heart of the gallery stands The ArtisTree, a captivating installation that doubles as a circular bench, offering visitors a place to sit while adding warmth and a sense of wonder to the space. Designed by a local artist, the surrounding floor is traced with the paths of high-profile hurricanes throughout the years.

Sustaining Art, Culture, + Creativity

The gallery is designed to create a striking and inviting entrance to the building, serving as a year-round showcase for professionally curated art exhibitions featuring both local and national artists, while the theater renovation provides the flexibility to support the Arts Council functions.
