Winston Salem Montessori School
Education
Positioned on a wooded lot between an existing barn and farmhouse, the Montessori School of Winston-Salem’s Upper School serves as a bridge between both built and natural environments. A project that responds to the Montessori concept of respect – for self, others and the environment – gives students the freedom to explore and develop to their fullest potential. The layout was driven by several majestic old growth oak trees that were saved and are now integral to the campus. Context is celebrated through modern takes on familiar forms and materials, while deep overhangs provide transitional spaces to experience nature areas.

Architecture
The centerpiece of the renovation is a modern architectural overhang that serves as a seamless transition between the indoor learning spaces and the natural outdoors.
The overhang is crafted with natural wood materials, featuring slatted wood boards that create a sense of openness while providing shade and ventilation.
Floor-to-ceiling geometric shaped windows and glass doors further the connection to the natural world, enhancing the learning experience.
By integrating modern design elements, natural aesthetics, and environmentally conscious practices, the Montessori School is a vibrant, nurturing space that inspires students to thrive academically and personally.
